Saturday...trees, tyres and a blank!

Had a couple of hours lure fishing on the North Lake and not a sausage! Ok, the weather wasn't great but I didnt even get a follow...nor did the other angler also lure fishing both the North & South Lakes! Grrr....

As the water (North Lake) is starting to clear it is easier to peer down to the bottom...am quite surprised how deep the swims actually are on the causeway! Also, the corner swim at the far end (coming from the river end), I think it will be peg 18 or 19 has a tractor tyre in it! It is a couple of yards out and what looks like a good 8-10ft down so be careful if you are fishing this swim as it is one snag you will not budge!

Tried the river afterwards, again not a sniff but the rain was starting to come down and I decided to give up! What was quitye surprising, considering the rain we have had, the river looked quite low (although I only ventured into the pegs above the main bridge). Did manage to hook some line that was attached to branch (mid river) which put up quite a fight, I got it in though and removed it so at least one good deed for the day!

Ps There are so many trees down around the place, including one right across the path from the carpark!

Pike on the Lakes

I am certainly no expert on Pike, but I have had a quantum leap in success rates since I started using LAMPREY, these are excellent baits popped up as a dead bait, or used as a wobbled bait. The action as they move through the water is unbeatable.
2 issues... I am a little concerned about the ethics of using lamprey, and secondly ( although not in the same league ) is that they are relatively expensive.
If your conscience allows, give them a try on the lakes.

Re: Pike on the Lakes

Ethics of using a dead 'fish'? Lamprey have been written about for years as good bait for Pike (as are Eels but as they are declining best not to encourage that). Also saw the programme 'Predators' today and it was an episode on Chub...ideal bait was sections of Lamprey...as well as steak (prebait with some mince) and small deadbaits.

As for the cost...now that I CAN understand!!

Re: Re: Pike on the Lakes

Hi Bankzzy, I refer to Ethics not regarding the use of a dead fish, but in acknowledgement of the fact that Lamprey numbers are declining. Perhaps not to the same degree as the eel, but nevertheless, numbers are on the way down.

Re: Pike on the Lakes

Oh right...didn't know they were to be honest! Seems we should get a supply from the USA as they have millions!!

Today...

Tried the lure on the North Lake today (before wandering down the Colne)...not much happening but did have a take (thought it was weed at first) and played a Pike of around 2lb...as I was deciding on whether to 'glove' it out or net it, it slipped the hook so...... Thats 3or4 Pike that have slipped the hooks while lure fishing this venue and I have still to land anything!

Did catch a nice Perch on the river and had a couple of follows from a smallish Pike and another nice Perch...

Grrrrr...........

Spent the whole day on the North Lake today, in the rain, and not a single bite - not even a line bite! Speaking to Dave D I was in a good swim and baits in the right place (I used numerous) but still nothing, just one of those days I suppose!

Re: Grrrrr...........

Hi,

I spent 4h on the north lake today with spinner rod and had nothing. Is there any pike at all ? If yes, how big pikes I can expect?

Re: Grrrrr...........

Have often spent a couple of hours with the lure rod on the North Lake...had a few takes and near misses but not landed a Pike yet! With a smaller lure there is the chance of a Perch or two as well. I mainly use the soft 'rubber' ones as opposed to normal 'hard' lures... Most seem to be small jacks but have been told they go up to 'early' double figures... When the weather gets a bit cooler I will definitely be having a crack with some deadbaits as there are quite a few swims that just scream out "PIKE" that just are not producing on the lure!

I sometimes work the North Lake (not had a go on South Lake to be honest but some must be in there) and if not succesful I wander down to the river and give that a crack. Have had both Perch and Pike from there, nothing too big at the moment but the big un's are there!

Re: Any updates?

Hello folks.Just had a 24h session on south lake. All day long I had no baits.Tryed different rigs, baits and everything was goin in vain.End to make the matter even worse..fish was active on both lakes.Water was boiling with bubbles.End I thought to myself that fish just simply laughing at me.Just before the dark sets in..I've tryed a method fishing.Had a tench in 20 mins.My mood become somewhat much better. Was having a fish quite offen.Ended up with 8 tench, ranging 6-7lbs,and a bream at 9lb 9oz.Was very pleased with that bream.End by the looks if it..it still spawning:) Lost 3 fish and one took my hookling of 10lb.That was a massive fish.Apart from the weed that was coming out with the fish(fish just couldn't fight at all),it was a good fishing.
If interested I could upload some pictures from last night or other that I muster while fishing club waters.

Poaching Alert

Looks like the nocturnal poachers are out in force on the lakes. If you see anything suspicious... please call big Dave Donovan immediatelly..... Like the Angel of Death... once summoned he WILL find a victim !!!!!

Re: Poaching Alert

I never see anyone there on the times I have fished......are these poachers catching anything?

Not the right thread but is anyone catching on these two lakes (apart from the chap the other month)?

Re: Re: Poaching Alert

Virtually every morning Dave picks up home made rod rests from the banks of each lake. Looks like these guys do a quick recky... and with no one on the lakes they enjoy an undisturbed night session.

Dave reports fish from both the North and South lakes, the North Lake carp are being taken from pre-baited swims in the margins.

Friday evening...

Had a couple of hours lure fishing on the North lake friday evening and had the lake to myself! Had a small pike have a go at my lure twice but no hook up... Only one angler on South lake so I did not have a go on there as I didn't want to disturb him... Also tried the river but other than a few perch following my lures absolutely zilch...this fishing lark can be soul destroying at times! lol

Cement works

Used to be a member years ago but moved away, spent alot of time fishing the golf course lakes which back then were absolutly fantastic to fish, regularly producing bags of tench over 80lb.

Just before i moved there was a oil/petrol? spill from the storage facility at the top of the hill which i believe back then destroyed the fishing for a couple of seasons. How does the venue fish now?

Is it still the case that that the North lake will produce more fish but the south one will produce bigger?

Interesting to hear that you can night fish the lake, when i was a member the only time you could fish it was the BBQ night match (which i won a once!!) and you may as well not fished at night because nobody caught anything or was i to drunk!!

Im just getting over operations to my legs and thought i would spend some peacefull hours on the lakes taking in the lovely surroundings can you still get in thro the cement works and park relativly close to the lakes?

Many thanks Ray
